CHAPTER 2 : Choose a niche

Choosing a niche

A niche is a specific topic, category or segment your website / blog will revolve around. Almost anything you can think of can be a niche - "how to train your dog", "modifying cars" , "self-improvement" , "parenting" , "cooking recipes" , "how to improve your memory" , "architectural design" , "antique" , "nightlife" , etc.

There are a lot of advice that you should choose a niche based on the things that you are passionate about, and you can earn money online from absolutely every single niche. WRONG, you need to choose a niche which has enough audience or people who are interested in it as well. You will not be able to earn anything if you do not have enough audience. Think about it, being passionate about your niche is not enough to build a profitable business. You have to make sure your niche/market has enough profit potential to meet your financial goals.

How do we know if the niche has enough profit potential

I personally value this by the number of searches per month for the general niche topic.

NB : To get information on the number of searches for keywords, sign up to https://adwords.google.com/ko/KeywordPlanner/Home

step 1 : Click 'Get search volume data and trends'. See picture below.

Identifying number of searches.

Step 2 : Type your keywords in the box. Make sure you enter your niche keyword like this - [niche keyword], if you don't put the keywords in square brackets it will not bring up accurate results of the amount of people searching for that keyword every month. Select the targeted location and hit "Get search volume" button. See picture below :

Step 3 : Evaluate the result. Personally I look for niche with at least 10,000 search monthly. See picture below :

Result of keyword search for earning money online

Above result shows average monthly searches of 12,100, I will not consider niches with less than 10,000 searches monthly.

You do not want to choose a niche in dying trend

You need to have a niche that is growing in trend, or at least not dying off.

NB : Check your niche if it is in a dying trend at https://www.google.com/trends/ .

Step 1 : Sign up to Google trend. Put in your keyword for your niche, see picture below :

Step 2 : Evaluate the result. See picture below :

If you have got yourself a niche with at least 10,000 searches and it is still growing in trend, you are ready for the next big step - creating a website, a platform where you can earn your financial freedom and win the lifestyle you dream of. Congratulations, you are already that much closer to fulfilling your dreams.

This is very powerful stuff! I have not heard of google trends before, my niche has come out borderline for monthly searches and a slight upward slope for the trend.

Extremely valuable advice on how to choose the right niche. Have personally used Google Adwords in the past and found it to be a very useful tool.

I did not know that we can make use of Google Adwords to check for keywords that will drive more traffic to our site. This is my first time to hear about this. I will try this method of choosing good keyword/s for my future posts. Thank you for sharing this valuable information.

I think it is essential to choose something not too broad. But the really important step is choosing a niche you enjoy spending time in. And don’t overcomplicate! Cheers!

Choosing a niche which is not too broad will definitely reduce the competition, but that can be resolved by selecting the correct keywords. And i agree that if your niche is something you enjoy, then it makes it so much easier to work on. However, a balance of passion and profit potential has to be reached.
